carb upgrade MkI/II

hey folks,

can anyone help me out?
i have just bought an 82 MkII CL with what i gather to be the worst spec 
engine - a 1457cc JB.... and i want some more power...

i think 1982 is a cross-over year because the 1457 is only listed for 
1981 and the combination of carb, vacuum lines/vac advance is a mix of 
the options described in the Haynes manual.

It has the 1B3 carb which is in pretty poor condition.... i need either 
to sevice or replace it...or could i UPGRADE - perhaps to the 2B5 or 
2E2.... without spending a fortune or changing the manifold, etc

any tips appreciated
