MK1 Engine removal shortcuts?
i've always found it easier to partially dismantle the accessories / head
while under the hood, then drop the block+tranny and slide out from under
the car. i figure that since the engine will be out, i'll be doing all of
the usually 'hard' tasks (seals, head gasket, water pump, etc), so why not
just make it easier to pull the engine in the process. also, the 5 speed
tranny (if you have one) makes top removal difficult, as the 5th gear
assembly comes into contact with the inner fender if you lift straight up,
meaning that you have to take a fairly awkward angle to get the whole
assembly topside.

Subject: MK1 Engine removal shortcuts?
Hi.
We're about to swap the 1.5 with a GTI motor on my
brothers 78 rocco.
Are there any shortcuts to this engine removal?
I assume the engine/trans have to come out together
and then split.
He has an engine hoist so we plan to take it out from the top.
I welcome your suggestions.
