Is it an 'S' or not?

Look for the options code in the rear hatch area, it should have what 
it was fitted with from the factory, including the interior & paint 
code etc.

Other than that, and minus an original bill of sale or window sticker 
I think you'd need to contact VW directly for a pedigree.
