Anyone know how to get around Websense?

actually, the best bet is to connect to your home machine with some form of
remote link. i _could_ use a VPN to my home box, but i find its much less
intrusive on the remote link to use a simple VNC client. this basically
works like pcanywhere, or windows xp remote desktop, only that the remote
connection is made by running a simple ~500k executable on the pc (it doesnt
even have to be installed, you just run it, from a disk even). there are
many variants (i use ultravnc). the program uses port 5900 to connect, which
may be blocked by a firewall when at work (it is blocked for me). this is
also no biggie, as you can install/run CYGWIN on your home pc, then
configure/run SSH. SSH is a secure protocol (encrypted). the cool thing is
that you can configure it to run on any port you want. i have mine
configured on the telnet port.

once at work, i run a program called PUTTY on the remote pc, which
allows me to establish the link to my home pc (over the telnet port), as
well as allowing me to 'tunnel' port 5900 (the VNC port) through that link,
and to my home pc.

with the link established i run the remote VNC client and tell it to
connect to - get this - ITSELF. when it tries to connect to itself
(127.0.0.1), it ends up connecting through the PUTTY tunneled port and ends
up actually talking to my home pc.

the real kicker is that those IS guys would only see a single connection
going out over the relatively harmless telnet (or whatever you use) port.
telnet is used by some for text-based email checking on linux machines, so
you could use that as your justification (if asked). just because you happen
to be 'checking your email' over an interactive/visual remote desktop
program, tunneled through an encrypted secure protocol... well, thats
another story.

i know it sounds like a bunch of stuff, but once its set up its nothing
more than running a couple of shortcuts to make the connection.

i've been considering putting together a guide for this whole thing,
perhaps i should throw a page up.

note: ultravnc, cygwin, and putty are all free / open source apps.
