Wrong again, partially. :p
The '83 Wolfie introduced the 1.8 JH 90 HP engine. It also
introduced the close-ratio gearbox (I believe it was the 2H
that year.)
I did see a totally original, totally mint '83 Wolfie in
Michigan at a car show in '97. Talked to the original
owner, said it was his garage baby - it had 13k miles on it
at the time. He mentioned he'd possibly get rid of it if
VW ever produced a convertible New Beetle.
