Well, my valve's "little arm thingie" (technical term)  is cable tied to the 
upper stress bar in an attempt to divert the coolant out of the core, but 
it's still blowing hot air. I doubt that anything in the dash/cable would 
help this, so I'm gonna replace the valve. Expect stories about burping to 
follow. And on mine I get heat from the upper side vent too. It's a double 
whammy actually -  I don't draw cool air from the hood vents (since there 
are none) so I have to think of some way to plumb in some cool air from 
below into the rain tray as well. And look into header wrap for the DP I 
guess too...see? It's always something. Once, long long ago, I was sane and 
owned no Sciroccos...
