hatch trunk cover

Hi -

Anyone come up with an easy but durable solution to fix where the trunk cover shaft pivots behind the rear seats. In other words, the board/shelf that opens when you open the hatch has a rod on the end of it. but on my car (an 86 16v) the brackets on either end that the rod fits into are long broken/gone. Any ideas would be a help.
