heater core is like $50, depending on brand and where you buy. any local 
parts store carries them. i wouldn't say it's an easy job, but it's very 
doable. i guess it would depend on the mechanical experience/ability of the 
person doing the job.  as for value of the car, around here(ohio) an auto 
passat vr6 with about 112k goes for $2500 to $3500, depending on options and 
condition etc....
do you / does he know what's involved in getting to the heater core?
