what fights rust?
There are jelly products that will remove rust. I've been using them
lately on my car restoration and they work pretty well. I think they're
sometimes called naval jelly, but I picked one up at autozone that just
said "rust remover." You brush it on, wait a few minutes, and remove it
with a wire brush or something similar. It at least helps soften up top
layers of rust so they're easier to grind out and will easily remove the
beginnings of surface rust. It has to be used several times to get deep
rust out. I've since switched to sandblasting, though, which is doing a
much better job than my chemicals. If you have an isolated hole,
though, I would just grind it out and use a wire brush or paint
stripping wheel to remove any remaining paint and undercoating from
around it to check for more rust, and then repair the metal and repaint.
