Didn't the 83 - 84 GTI have the Scirocco 90 HP engine?

Yes. Ok, time for a clarification. In Europe during the 1976 model year
VW introduced the Golf GTi and the Scirocco GTi - both with 1588cc motors
puttng out 110hp. So, no, Sciroccos were not always the same as a GTI.
In the US, VW waited (to my dismay) until 1983 model year to give us a
GTI, and it was the weaker 90hp JH motor that we got, not the 112hp 1.8
that was then in use on the European Golf GTI and Scirocco GTX (8V). The
same 90hp was given to the 1983 Scirocco Wolfsburg Editions, and all US
8V Sciroccos after that.
Then in 1985 the US GTI came with a 100hp 1.8, unlike the 1986 Scirocco
(8V) which came with the JH again.
Sorry about the confusion.
