california smog defeats our engine swap
I had to have my car smogged by the referee back when I did my swap. RD
engine punched out to 2008 cc's ported & polished head, neuspeed 268 cam
etc. They asked me what engine I swapped into the car. I told them it was a
2 liter 8v from an 86 GTI. They looked it up in their book and said there
was no 2 liter for an 86 GTI. I said it was originally a 1.8 liter, but had
been bored and stroked so it was now a 2.0 liter. Their response...We don't
care about that, we'll go with a 1.8. Passed the visual and the sniffer with
ease. Now I have a sticker in the door jamb and can take it anywhere to be
smogged.

Don't you actually have to LIVE in the county in which you're registering
the car?
I actually had to deal with this f*cking mess myself today - went to a
"recommended" local smog station for the SECOND time in the last couple of
days. First time, the "recommended" smog tech was too busy to mees with the
tuning in case it didn't pass and told me to come back during the week.
Well, I went back this afternoon only to find the garage manager on duty.
F*ucking tough guy says, "do you know if there's an aftermarket cam in
there? The idle seems kinda lumpy..." Smart-ass...even if it is only a
g-grind...This raises his suspicions so he goes and looks up the vacuum line
diagram and notices that my ignition retard port on the distro is capped.
"well, it just failed right there...". (*&$^%*&
I've still got a couple of more-work-involved options, but it pisses me off
when they get all worked up over the visual part of it when there's no doubt
it'll pass the sniffer...
