Brush. Scrape. Brush. Wipe. (x1000) (whine)
Ahhh Xylene, an all time favorite of mine! Back in college I
accidentally spilled a full gallon of oil based paint in the back seat
of my '81 diesel Jetta. Coincidentally I had a full gallon of Sonny
Boy brand Xylol <http://getty.net/scirocco/xylol_big.jpeg> in the
trunk at the time of the spill, which I used to clean up the mess.
The Xylol did a good job removing the paint from the upholstery, but
it completely fried my brain for nearly two weeks. Spending 2-3 hours
a day driving in the winter an hour back and forth to school/work with
Xylol soaked into the cushions was not good for the brain, but I
laughed at just about everything!
"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five
sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of
cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers...
Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of
raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the
trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is
to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me
was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and
irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge,
and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon." -Raoul Duke

Someone remind me not to do this again...if any of you think you're up
to the task to do a ground up restoration, I strongly advise you think
long and hard. And then when you're done, think about it again. Man,
this thing better turn out the way I envision...
I just spent all day of a holiday scraping adhesive from the C-pillars
and deck lid shelves of my mk1 (yesterday was spent removing the
wiring and fusebox). GAWD - it sucks. I thought when I finished my
research stint in college I would never have to mess w/ xylene again.
My mistake. I wonder how many brain cells I axed today...I swear that
adhesive just continues to cure over the 23+ years since it was
installed.
What's worse is that I still have the doors, door and quarter window
bases and firewall to clean up and that's before paint prep. This is
definitely one of those "no end in sight" doldrum moments.
