Gas tank replacement
Well the last two I have done I have done in this manner;
1. Use Hand pump drain pump. Or you could hot wire the in tank pump and
drain it that way.
2. Remove the bolts to the rear axle bushing assembly
3. Remove back seat and disconnect electric and hoses from "in-tank" fuel
pump.
4. disconnect the rear brake lines from the axle (alternatively split the
bracket that is holding that in place and slip it out of the bracket to have
enough loose for axle movement.
5. Jack the car up until, making the axle lower itself while body lifts
itself (watch the lines if you left them on. Secure body of car at this
height with stands.
6. Remove the inner panel on the passenger rear wheel well side, and
disconnect the hoses (below body), that are around the fuel pump and
accumulator. Replace as required (and 90% of them will, it's a good time to
restore them old dried up hoses...)
7. The tank is held in place by 7-8 bolts with plates, pay attention on the
direction of the plates because they provide the correct "support". Let the
tank drop down slowly and wiggle that bugger out.
Cheers... Oh yeah remember to perform in well ventilated area, and do not
let anyone smoke around you. Flash bang! on fumes.
Oh Yeah install is the reverse of this...

Subject: Gas tank replacement
On the topic of replacing gas tanks....I have sourced a new one here in
Canada for $425CDN shipped (ouch)....now, does anybody have the procedure of
replacing the old tank with the new one? I have questioned mechanics about
it and they all shudder at the thought....I want it replaced and will do it
myself. ALso, does anybody know what type of sending unit is inside the '87
16v tank? Is there just the in-tank full transfer pump? Or is there other
things inside that can be swapped...or do I need new parts. Please let me
know any info as this is one I am going to do myself against every trained
mechanics advice!!
