Abandoned Scirocco...

Here's how acquiring an abandoned car works in Colorado. I'm sure it varies, but it'll give you a general idea of how not worth it it is. First, you report it to the Police. They put a notice on it saying the owner has 24hrs to do something about it. Then they tow it to an impound lot. DMV issues a certified letter to the address connected to the car's plates. After 90 days from the date the letter was sent, if there is still no response then the towing company owns it. They can sell it to you, send it to the wrecker or give it to the police to auction off. And of course, you don't have a title. Overall, you gotta wait a really long time for a whole lot of things to happen and even then, the towing company might sell it for some unreasonable amount. Talk to a state trooper that you know, or call your local DMV for info for your state.

Except that when they report it stolen, you're screwed.
Even worse if you fixed it up and made it presentable.

I'd check with the local police department or DMV
and report it as abandoned. It may be towed, it may
go to an impound lot, and in X days, it may be sold
off to some lucky person -- with a clear title.
