OT:Virus/Worm protection

OK, I think I have something infecting my computer.  It has been running
slower and slower.  My Norton ran out at the beginning of the month, but I
was afraid type any credit card-payment stuff because someone might be
watching.  Anyway, when I run a scan, it seems to hang up in the Temporary
Internet Files/ Content.IE5/...
My question is, can I just delete all the C:\windows\temp stuff and all the
c:\windows\temporary Internet Files... ?  I think I will be able to get
through a entire scan after that and get the latest virus definition from
work.  Thanks
