Epoxy
Let me clarify my statements:
Yes, the boats are expensive, but the expense does not lie in the construction materials, it lies in the designing, testing and outfitting. Composites are much cheaper than say, superplastic-formed titanium or aluminum (everything is relative here) or carving the hull out of a block of beryllium. Agreed?
Yes, they are the cutting edge of design(but not necessarily lamination technology, theirs is trickle-down from aircraft)..... and nothing is obsoleted faster than cutting edge/high tech (ref. computers). Race boats/cars/guns/bicycles/skis/etc. more than a year old are no longer competitive and are retired/cannibalized/scrapped. (Unless you like vintage racing.) I wasn't very clear on that, but that's what I meant by "expendable".
I'm done.

As for round the world racers - people can, and have, died when their yacht delaminates in the middle of South Atlantic. These boats use extremely expensive and high tech lamination technologies. They are not cheap, and are not expendable.
