Are you going to rebuild the engine? if so once you got the pistons apart
drop each on into B12 chem0-clean stuff works in 45 mins and works wonder,
but I would not use it directly inside the engine bay with a rag.
Try carbon-cleaner (carb-cleaner) with a plastic scraper...but I think you
will find the results are minimal for the amount of work involved.

I pulled the head today on my Golf and saw that there was some build up on
all of the pistons. How would I get that off, just use a plastic paint
scraper?
Also, on the #2-#4 exhaust ports had white in all of them, but on the #1 was
jet black. Whats with that?
BTW, Mr. Bentley could have mentioned that the head bolts were the 12mm star
like ones BEFORE I took my car apart...
