Tearing into a quaiffed tranny?

Im curious about the 4th gear thing tho......Here is what happens:
Shift into 4th- the act of it feels normal to the hand and it locks to 
place but the positioning of 4th simply acts like Neutral. Could it be a 
key in the 3rd 4th selecter has slipped or broken? 
Since it locks into place I am assuming that the shift fork is fine.
There is no metallic noise from the 4th gear position, nor was there 
ever any when the event occured (burning rubber through third racing a 
mustang)- just instant slippage.

Is your prognosis still the gear itself as most probable?
