You can usually free the upper spring seat from the keeprs by using a
suitably sized socket and a (deadblow) hammer to give the upper spring
seat a good sharp whack. This technique works for me every time on diesel
valves, which for some reason or other seem to really like to get stuck.
Don't be afraid of hitting it too hard... :)
