what type of oil is better, what about filters?

David,

I have a K&N on my 01 1.8t, the reason they kill the MAF is becasue people over oil them. And when over oiled the oil cakes the MAF sensor itself and you throw CEL's.
Best way to avoid that is to clean properly and oil the filter, then let sit for a day. Now comes the fun part, put the filter in an old pillow case and swing it around for a few minutes. Due to centripital force (sp) any loosely bound oil will be flung off. Install in the car and go. The Airaid you speak off is a guaze type filter also offering now additional bebefits over the K&N.

And if the MAF does become saturized you can clean it with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol, just make sure it is dry before you reinstall it.

If you get any MAFS through the shop you think are broader line send them my way, after you have replaced it on the customers car.

Suprisingly, I have an opinion on that too... :-)

Mann and Knecht are both used by the factory... Dealer filters are the bomb,
and usually if you buy three or more, they will give you a jobber discount.
About 6.50 ea... Deutsch and (I have discovered recently) Bosch filters are
made by the same folks that make Purolator. While I have not torn open a
Deutsch or a Bosch, the Purolator was almost as bad as the Pennzoil filter I
looked at... WIX, of all the aftermarket stuff I have looked at was pretty
good. I would used it in a pinch... I personally would use factory above all
else...
