Oil leak won't go away :(

Car in question here is an '88 cabriolet, but It could aslo apply to sciroccos as well...The car started to leak oil where the oil filter mounting bracket connects to the block.  Last night I put in a new OE gasket and then the car started to puke oil from the same location worse then before. 

At this point I'm not sure whether I sure try again with another gasket (assuming I did something wrong) or go the silicone route.  Anybody know what would be better for this connection and what type of silicone I should use if this better way to go?
