couple things

First, moving the battery to the rear compartment;
   Running 2 guage wire should be fine, actually thats almost overkill,
unless you are running a GIGANTIC stereo system, 2 guage will carry more
than enough voltage with low resistance and supply more than enough amperage
for the car to run well. However, make sure it is secure, and it is a good
idea too put a foam pad under the battery to keep it from discharging. AND
put a fuse on the positive cable a few inches away from the terminal in case
a line shorts (ZAP). Unless you run a daisy chain of ground cables between
the engine and body, run a line that connects to the fenderwall with a
seperate wire running to the block or trans.

Second, I once left my portable phone sitting on my battery of my 97 gti.
Drove to my friends house, partyed, stayed the night, and came home. The
next day i could not find my phone, so i paged it and heard my car making a
funny sound. Sure enough it was just where i left it, on top of my battery.
How foolish is that!!
