Header HELP!

How did a machine shop increase the thickness of the flange by 2X?

    I have had two 4into1 headers break at the head flange mount, so on
  the last
    new set I bought I brought to a mach.shop who doubled the thickness
  all the
    way across, and I used stock VW metal gaskets with new studs, works
  fine. Michael
