Alternator stops charging at 2500 rpm?

At idle the cars voltage is fine at 13 volts. Raise the rpm to 2500 and
the alternator cuts out. I am sure that the belt is tight but I guess the
AC compressor belt could be a little loose...or is it the regulator?
Anyone ever see this before? I had to drive to work this morning at 55 mph
so I would not break 2500 rpm....what a PITA!!! It is an auto-passat in
case you start to do RPM to speed calculations.
Thanks
