1. in America its called a 12 point triple-square bit 12mm size - for head
bolts , but here is a link at what it looks like,

need a 10mm for starter bolts, and I believe its an 8mm 12 point for the cv
joint bolts, usually sold in kits of 3-5 triple squares in a pouch.

2. I am not sure about your DX motors, because the copy of etka does not
list such an engine. It could be a UK engine, but in any case I do believe
that the rule of thumb is; (and I could be wrong doing this from memory as I
never use hydraulic heads), If the head has 5 bearing caps holding the cam
down it is a mechanical head, if it has 4 bearing caps it is hydraulic. If
both engines are DX coded (which I could not find), then I would assume they
are both the same engines, and the heads could be exchanged without a
problem, I am sure if I am incorrect someone will interject (grin),

3. on the tranny case , on the large bell housing of the case, look around
the edge you should find a plate flat section with numbers, the first 2 are
your tranny codes (i.e.: it will look like; 4K25467)

I'm in the course of stripping my '83 German Spec GTi for useful goodies -
but have some questions which show my ignorance. Please bear with me - I'm
just starting out!

Stupid Question 1.
What is the tool for taking the cylinder head bolts out called? Is it
specifically a VW special tool - or is it generic? If it's VW what's the
part number? If it's generic, what do I ask for at the tool store?

Stupid Question 2.
How do I tell if I have a hydro head? I have two 8v MKII injected motors.

How do I recognise a 4k tranny - I suspect I may have one
