Rims n' tires

Aside from clearance questions, which are rather unpredictable, going larger than 15" will necessitate very low profile tires.  Low profile tires come with their own set of issues, namely reduced protection for those sweet new rims.  
A 50-series 15" tire offers little enough protection....

  What would be the best setup for the rocco once I put the H&R springs on....the car will be lowered 1"-1.5"....could I get some sweet 16" rims on her without chopping up the wells?  What experiences do people have with outfitting roccs with larger rims?
