The place I learned to skydive you first had to do three solo jumps
from 3000 ft. where your chute opened up right away.  Then, if you
wanted to get your jump license, you had to go through 8 more
lessons/steps.  These jumps are at 10,000 ft. and there's about 40
seconds of freefall before you have to deploy your chute.  For the
first few jumps from this height you leave the plane with two
instructors holding on to you on either side for the free fall.  Over
the next few jumps they hold on to you less and less until you learn
control during freefall...  Tandem jumps don't appeal to me either, so
I'll most likely go through the above training next summer - even
though they almost killed me once...  :)
