forced to unload the scirocco, what next?

Hi, need a little input on my next VW.  One of my scirocco buds 
recently bought a VR6 jetta that he's really happy with.  I'm 
wondering how the older VR6's hold up under the miles.  I've 
seen some nice older Jetta VR6's and GTI's that are the right 
purchase price and under 100k miles, but I'm unsure about how 
they'll be in terms of maintenence.  I can afford maybe one 
dealer visit every 6 months, and limited do-it-yourselfing 
otherwise.
