Jetta Steering Rack Question



Dan, this makes me nervous when you say it is an all day event.  That
estimate would have to double me.

When my rack went PS fluid got past the seals of the internal hydraulic
cylinder and into the rack
and pinion part. Eventually it leaked past the boots.
So, I'd say the best way to check if the rack is on the way out would be
to remove the boots or at
least insert a screwdriver and pry them to the side a little to see if
any fluid is in the gear part
of the rack.
The biggest PITA about replacing it is getting the PS lines off and
disconnecting the steering
column.
It's an all day event.
