Where is the engine code??

Yeah, I picked up the head for $100, it had had a valve job for some guy for his GTI and then it sat in a friend's shop for a couple of years and he never picked it up. It had definitely been resurfaced at least a few thousandths.

I swapped it on at the time because I couldn't get an exhaust manifold stud out of my JH head that I had broken off. It was cheap at the time and I knew the valves and lash were going to be good. I still have the JH head around and I've been meaning to try the candlewax trick on that too.

You confirmed what I originally thought, thanks!
