16V Oiling (not), NOW: Dell computers...

Laptop or desktop? Their desktops aren't as bad, because you can get away with poorer quality there. All the parts inside of an old Dell had Dell stamped all over them and were well assembled. Now, the on-off panel has Dell on it, everything else has Made in Nexico or Taiwan. Things are pretty much just snapped together, with a very "unique" approach to assembly. If you never plan on upgrading, it's not really a concern, but if you mess around inside, you'll find yourself screwed.

As for price, yup, you just can't beat Dell's deals. They have super low prices with all kinds of free upgrades and add-ons. They give obscure discounts to certain people (realtors get 7% off) and the best plan to get the most stuff is to print out your ideal computer online, then call them and they'll usually toss in even more free upgrades. I used to offer to build computers for people, but I can't compete anymore. It got to the point where I was making like $5/hr just to keep the cost reasonable. But, that's a quality vs. cost issue.

They aren't bad. We have been buying Dells where I work instead of building
them ourselves and over the last two years it has saved us a lot of time and
money. The money that the company saves by buying Dells and simply
installing software instead of having someone price out and build them makes
up for any price difference. I doubt a price difference even exists between
a homebuilt computer and a Dell these days.

no-name companies in Mexico. Absolute horrible quality now. Pair this up
with a tech support based in India, where they are trained not on how to fix
computers, but on how to pass around a phone call. It's sad when really good
companies turn to complete crap due to cost cutting. The only reason these
companies are still doing okay is they're falling back on their old
reputation, which won't last for very long. Maybe execs will realize that
the cheapest path isn't always the most profitable one.

Hmmm, I should not be shocked by this, but I am. Are they really that bad?
I was considering getting one... And don't somebody tell me that I could
put one together, blah, blah, blah.... I will buy an apple before I do
that... Don't get me started on the richest man in N.A....

Anyone else confirm Dells' state of being?

Thanks Dan,
David
