Rabbit/Cabby folks- fender question

Well, this is yet another annoying "A1 but not a Scirocco" question from me. 
SO, when did the fender style change on these cars, and will a earlier 
fender (pre '88) fit an 88 Cabby? It appears the pre 87 (inclusive) fenders 
lack the cutout for the corner marker, is this a late Cabby specific fender 
then? And does anyone know, is the cutout the only difference? I know the 
grilles are different (two as opposed to four headlights). It looks like I 
may have a small subset of a small subset of VWs here, at least 
cosmetically.
