Just shoot me now(now super long and whiny)
Pt 1:
I wish it would snow here. Send the weather westward. If we don't get a whole crapload of precipitation, this place is going to be a dust bowl and there is going to be some serious forest fires. We already have one that has caused evacuation and was declared a state of emergency.
Pt 2:
After equally laughing and sympathizing with you, I gotta one-up you in the small town dept. I'm three long, desolate hours (190mi) from ANYTHING. Dealership, minimum 3hrs. NAPA and CarQuest are here in town. NAPA charges unbelievable prices for everything ($30 for a tube of CV joint grease and if you have to fill the boot with grease, you'd need 2 of them) and has to order everything I would need for my car. It takes 2 days to get parts to here, however they are 4 for 4 at not getting the part in time, causing another 2 day delay, if it's a weekday. Weekends don't count. CarQuest is reasonably priced, but pretty much just stock truck components. Same ordering time. Junkyard? Uh, that's a negative, Cap'n. 3hrs for that too.
Pt 3:
While we haven't had rain, we've had a hell of a lot of melting snow. With a dirt parking lot, it's turned into a serious mud pit. We had one section of soft dirt about 20ft x 30ft turn into 6" deep muck. I accidently got stuck in it with Lacy's car and covered it in mud trying to get out.
I did get my green machine fired up though. Replaced a coolant hose and oil, jumped the battery and it fired right up. As a bonus, the whole engine is coated in oil so it will never rust. I swear the block itself is seeping oil through its pores or something. I doubt that any maintanence work has been done on the car since it was new in '84. With 50 series tires, no shocks and lowering springs, it's a super rough ride. There's a hole in the hanging exhaust that adds nicely to the unusually loud engine. Every single bushing, mount, etc in the front is shot. With the manual rack, I'm constantly fighting the very loose steering wheel over every bump and ridge in the road. I spent days rewiring the entire stereo setup and trying to figure out what the hell the mess of wires is only to have 3 out of the 4 speakers work and horrible engine whine coming through the speakers. I tried wiring the deck to the ignition only to find a lump of solder about the size of a peanut holding some wires
together. I gave up on trying to figure that mess out. The starter bolt (I think, haven't gotten to look yet) fell out while I was going down the road the other day and chunks of fender liner keep dropping off. The spot where the plowing company hit and ran my car (which I can do nothing about) was shoved against the rear tire, making the car immovable. I was afraid to pull it because I had a hunch I wouldn't have a rear qtr panel then. Luckily, the winter caused the rust chunks to fall off, so I didn't have to do anything. Also, for some reason the paint is no longer sticking to that panel and is cracking and flaking off. On top of all that, I'm running on about 3 cyl. One's shot, the rest are eh.
Hey, if Cathy can vent, I figured I might as well too. At the very least, hopefully it'll make Cathy not feel quite so bad.

First:
It's friggin April. So what's with the -10C forecast (with snow) for
tomorrow. The only solace is that Jim and other Rochesterians always have
worse weather.
Second:
AAAARGH. Owning a VW in a small town just so sucks sometimes. The new Cabby
just needs to pass safety, which requires (to my knowledge) the difficult
and daunting problem of replacing a headlight bulb. Whoopdeefrikkindoo. The
daughter comes home and I mention that I still have to do that and she says
the plastic part it goes into is broken. I'm thinking, yeah, I know there is
some damage to the grille, but that's no big deal. NOPE> WRONG!!! It's the
OTHER high beam, has this big honking hole in it from a stone. Right where
the word HELLA used to be? Just air. Lovely. The local yard has exactly ZERO
VWs of any type in it. And I can't call the dealer, it's the weekend, who
needs parts on the weekend? SO nobody is in parts till Monday. This after
the one week down time over a thrown belt, I mean, how hard does this simple
stuff have to be? ( and how can you ever get a car ready on a ten day
permit?)
Next option: So I phone the usual (two hours from here) cheap source of OEM
parts, and the guy who can even give me a price isn't there till Monday,
they don't stock them but they can get them. But who knows how much $$$, I
gotta wait to talk to the guy Monday. AAAARGHHHH. Then I'll have to fly TDI
airlines to get there after work before they close.
Option three is (the useless attempt to get parts at) Canadian Tire. Someone
said they have Bosch ones that will fit. Yep, I'm still gonna do it, but
they never even have plugs. Just ask Daun's sister how hopeless they are...
I can likely throw one of the MkI lamps in there, but I figure I may as well
get one that actually matches, it is a nice car, and deserves it.
Third:
Even though the road may well FREEZE tomorrow, we've had forty days and
forty nights of rain. My road is so awful I won't be driving a Rocco till
May or so. I may buy a Range Rover, this is safari style mud. And to add to
my delight, my new garage floor is sweating like a pig. One big layer of
water. Good for the cars too I bet.
Okay, it's noon, so I can go find some Sleeman's. I'll cheer up soon,
honestly I will. I just need to rip around in a 16V, and SOON. There really
IS no better therapy.
Cathy
PS I realize that some of you have REAL car problems, so just ignore me, 'k?
And no Drew, the headache is not for sale.
