A2 Jetta question; hard to get into reverse

ALso, mine had been stubborn going into reverse recently, it was (once
again) the little ball on the "lollipop" in the linkage, it fits into a
metal gate, and had gotten sloppy. New lollipop, cranked down, now reverse
is easy as you please. So that's yet another part that can impact reverse. I
believe A2s also have this part. This also leads to excessive "up and down"
play in the gear shift lever, it shouldn't flop around a lot, if it does,
you have a loose/damaged lollipop. This can also give a very evil rattle,
sounds like your exhaust rubbing on the frame. (hold the gear shift and it
goes away, another little diagnostic)
But I'd suspect you jumped a spline or two, that seems to be more common.
It's really hard to stay on track here, my husband likes his new ball, says
it will make him faster...
