octane baby!
Since I got my rocco, I've put nothing but 94 octane sunoco in it. My golf
however used to get 87 from pioneer, with 87 octane I got 500kms to the tank
in the city. After the switch to 93 octane pioneer I got 600kms to a
tank.......
Muahaha, mighty golf could stack up 900kms to a single tank on the highway.

My take; (you all just KNEW I couldn't stay out of this...)
Higher octane will not, in and of itself, give better mileage.
HOWEVER,
If you have a knock sensor (ks) ignition system, the ks will keep your
ignition advance at maximum for any condition, thereby providing max power,
thereby requiring the least amount of throttle opening required for that
condition, thereby giving you the best mileage.
Or, maybe not....

Yeah, a corny play on a song title, but I couldn't resist. Anyways, CO has
octane ratings at the pump ranging from 85 to 94. With gas prices ranging
from $1.77 to 1.99 respectively, I want to see if I can settle this hot
debate among my housemates. Does higher octane gas equal better gas mileage?
And enough of a better mileage to make it cost effective? This would be for
my relatively stock 84 8v, which doesn't deserve high octane gas if it
doesn't make a difference mileage-wise. When responding, please try to keep
the formula equations to a minimum as high school chem was a long time ago
and I just squeeked by.
TIA,
Dan
