After Market Wheels and Spring Clearance

So,  This is my first experience with non VW wheels.
15x7 Borbet C's  offset is 35 (apparently good for A1s) and with the 195/50s
on there the rear coil (stock 16V suspension) clears the edge of the tire by
about 1/4".  My pinky can barely fit between them.  i know tolerances are
pretty close in this area anyway, but is this not unusual?  If I ever had
205's on this set-up that would be 5mm closer...and that would be touching.
Is this a case for "spacers" ?
I have H&R Sport springs coming very soon but I dont think their diameter is
different so they should not affent this situation.
I know 1 or 2 former listers that have this wheel on thier MK1 and will
contact them directly as well.
Please share your experience on this.
