turboing an 8v
Guess I'm not doing too bad then, I have 3 out of 4. Only missing the Max Boost one. But I have the How to Keep Your VW....Alive book which makes up for it. I definitely second Per's and Greg's books, they're a great start for modding your car.

The following is a fairly complete list of parts for my nephew's JH 1.8
CIS
turbo (hopefully the format won't be totally lost):
Parts List
Description Supplier Qty Cost Extended
Cost
Turbo T3 50 trim compressor, .63 a/r turbine housing, Volvo 240T CIS FD
and
WUR (used) 1 $200.00
Wastegate actuator ATP 1 $69.00
Exhaust manifold ATP 1 $305.00
Downpipe ATP 1 $165.00
Oil feed line kit ATP 1 $25.00
Oil Return flange fitting for T3 ATP 1 $15.00
Oil return line kit ATP 1 $45.00
Gasket Kit for T3, Turbo, Oil, exhaust installation ATP 1 $15.00
Intercooler, Ford Probe (used) 1 $45.00
Boost gauge e-gauges.com 1 $40.00
Silicone hose
2.5" x 3" long (turbo inlet) 1 $20.00
2" 90 deg ell (turbo outlet) 1 $40.00
2" bump hose (intercooler piping) 4 $120.00
3" x 3" (tube to TB) 1 $20.00
tubing, steel u-bends
2.00" steel, turbo outlet to intercooler Jeg's 1 $20.00
2.00" steel, intercooler to TB Jeg's 1 $20.00
2.5" steel, fuel distributor to turbo inlet Jeg's 1 $20.00
Bosch recirulation valve, plastic 1 $39.00
Total $1,223.00
First, I'm not a cheapass, so some money could be saved, for instance on
the
silicone hoses.
Second, I've never actually bought a downpipe from ATP since they're
continually out of stock. I've always made my own out of stainless. The
total price is about the same if you don't include labor.
Third, I wouldn't buy any oil line kits again from ATP, the fittings
aren't
right and the lengths suck. The local Parker or Aeroquip store can help
you
out. Didn't buy the oil pan, since I drilled and tapped the block for
the
drainback.
Not included in the above, clamps (you'll need alot!), gaskets, argon
(for
the TIG welder) and more miscellaneous stuff than you can ever imagine!
Make sure your clutch is in good condition. Apparently, a stock one will
handle 8 psi boost.
After we work out some kinks I think this combination will get into the
14's
in the 1/4mile in a full interior Scirocco.
I'll never do another CIS turbo. Megasquirt is cheap, it totally
unclutters
the engine compartment, and it's totally tunable.
see http://scirocco.dhs.org/vw/list/D_Bubb/JH_turbo/ for some pics of
the
above. (or maybe you can see it in person at the next Cincy!)
Y'all let me know when you're tired of me posting the above link.

mainly
because it had a turbo in it. But turbos always seem out of my league.
However, I know a bunch of you have turbo'd 8v's and I was wondering
just
what is the cost. What parts can come from yards, what has to be bought,
how
hard is it to find yard parts and what kind of work does it take? I've
looked at the 'kits' people have put together on vortex and they all
seem
$1000 or more. The more detailed you are the better. Like if you put: 4
mandrel u bends, 2 18" pieces of aluminum pipe - $75 that would be way
helpful. Even better, anyone have a tech writeup on it? Just give me the
low-down on what it takes to turbo an 8v.
