Hey Julie, if your battery dies while driving, it is because the alternator
is not charging it.
With a voltmeter, measure at the alternator output/good ground, at the
battery positive post/good ground, and make sure that you get 13.8V at
around 1500rpm
Problem might be: bad alternator, bad voltage regulator, bad contact on the
positive wiring, bad contact on the negative wiring, OR a combination of all
these problems. Too much resistance in the charging circuit.
Remember, if the alternator is putting out 40 amps, it does not take a lot
of ohms to drop the voltage below 12V at the battery. E=RI (0.1 ohm * 40A =
4V)
New 90A alternator, with new upgraded positive wiring and negative wiring
will renew your charging circuit.
Cheers.

No, do not do this at all... Sorry to trump you on this, but do not do
this,
it will kill the ECU with the spark (ie spike) that trys to follow the
battery
lead as you pull it away... A customer did this recently on his 93 Corrado,
and it killed the brain in the speedo-cluster... An expensive mistake... I
realize that the car in question may actually be carbed, but any car with
any
type of ECU at all will not respond well to this sort of test...
