OT: buying car in another state - hows it *supposed to* work

im getting this passat in NY and driving it back to SC. is there anything im
supposed to do insurance wise on my end before i get the car? or is there
some sort of coverage thing since i currently have insurance on other cars?
also, how do tags work in NY? if they stay with the car, i should be good to
go. erm, im stupid on these things, help me out :).

i did this with the rieger, but im not sure if i did it correctly (i just
drove it home, TX to GA, then insured it).
