Shifter play

Hmm...
I'm embarrassed to ask a question regarding a generally external part... but with the ground clearance on my car it's just a pain to crawl under there (whine...). I've only had this rocc for a few months, and needless to say haven't studied the linkage enough. I bought my '88 16V from a friend who had installed the autotech "short shift" kit. The car was always VERY hard to get into 1st - like, if you were in a nasty mood, you could apply immense pressure to get it there, or kinda tootle on the clutch a bit while jiggling and trying to get it into first... but, man.. no fun. It FEELS like the left-right (at lever) location of the lever is off relative to the shift guides or something, because you have to use ALOT of force, holding to the left, in order to get it to be able to slip into 1st. It WAS fairly tight (um, compared to my 4runner), and crisp across all the other gears, but now I've driven it with the 1st gear force issue for a bunch of months, and I am certain I am now having Derrick's problem as it is really loosening up.
Several questions for the experienced:
1. WHAT the heck is causing the hard-into-first? Is there an alignment that need by adjusted?
2. Is there wear due to high lever force, such that external bushings (like, on the linkage) need to be "renewed"?
3. Are there internal parts that should also be replaced? If so, what need be removed to get access?
Okay. I have blathered enough.
TIA

Which Scott is that?

Takes just under an hour to rebulid most of the bearings and adjusting the
shifter.
I think Scott is making a solid shifter system for MKI and MKII's for a good
cost as well.
