Mufflers options - VR6

hey all,
A friend of mine has a 95 golf gti vr6. When she bought it it already had a 
Autotech sport tuned muffler system (cat back), but its driving her nutz 
with the noise. She has decided to get rid of it, and called the dealer and 
they want $307.00 for one + $80.00 labor. can Any one recomend a more 
echnomical one that isn't soooo loud? I had considered some laying sound 
absorbant mat in the trunk but wary to spend the money to find out it 
dosen't make much difference. Tia for any advice.
