2.0 conversion questions

I've recently discovered I have a bit more money than I expected and so I'm considering doing a 2.0 coversion in my 81 mk1. TT has a ton of conversion parts that they sell, but are they really necessary? I don't know what block I'd use, probably whichever is easier to find/cheaper. I want to put an 8v head on it, would a JH be okay? Basically, I need to know all the expenses and stuff involved. Can I use the accessories on the 1.7L I have in the car now? My other option is a slightly worked 1.8 JH. By slightly worked I mean bigger cam, possibly HD springs, lightened flywheel, bigger TB, and I dunno what else. I have a max budget of $1000. I already have suspension and handling lined up, so that wouldn't be budgeted in, but an exhaust would have to be. Tell me where to go and what to do, oh modding masters!
