performance question

Shawn is right: Making sure the systems are perfect is the FIRST thing you should do (even tho' I wouldn't call it a 'mod').  You must have a base-line to compare to before commencing with the trick stuff.  And remember this:

It's very tempting to try to cure a basic problem by throwing money/trick parts at it, but it never works out.  
(for instance; you have an annoying ignition miss and you think that a high-buck MSD ignition module is the easy answer rather than taking the time to hunt down the source of the miss...which may be a simple bad plug wire, in which case you'll still have the miss (or even worse) after installing the MSD.  I've seen it, been there in years past, still find it tempting.....

  Come drive my bone stock Topless Roc. Ewww.. Makes me realize what I have
  in the 84 and had in the 82. Yup, no downsides. (Its a perfect car for
  the Scirocco crashing wife to drive.) 

  Id say the BEST mod you can do is get it in top mechanical shape before
  you do ANY mods. Eliminate all the issues the car has before you start
  changing it. Thats first and foremost. then go from there. Lightened
  flywheel does make a difference and is on my top 10 mod list.
