Best oil weight
Remember: A multi-weight oil (i.e. 20w-50 or 10w-30) is never any more viscous than the first/smaller number.
A multi-weight oil starts with a stock that has the same viscosity as a straight-weight oil with the first/lower number, then has additives put in that prevent thinning out any further than a straight-weight oil of the last/higher number.
Therefore, a 10w-30 has the cold viscosity of a cold 10weight oil (because it IS a 10weight oil), and the hot viscosity of a hot 30weight oil (because of the properties of its additives).
The oil experts recommend against multi-weights with a difference between the two numbers of more than 30. i.e. at 20w-50 is okay, but a 10w-50 is asking for too much of the additives and may not give you the protection of, say, a 10w-40. Comprende'?
Several oil company sites have good insight on how to choose a suitable lubricant for your 16V VW engine. Most of them do not recommend using the 8v engine in any VW model.

I use 20w-50 all year round in the 16v, im in south Florida. I use 10w-30 in the Vr6 but im wondering if I should switch to 20-50 for the summer or will that be too thick for the Vr?
