this largely depends on what you want to be able to play the movie =
back on. you can compress to vcd or svcd format for playability on dvd =
players (svcd is a smaller file version of the mpeg2 compression used on =
dvds).
...otoh, if you only need to be able to play back on computers, i =
strongly recommend divx 5.05. this format is quickly beconing the =
standard, and there are even some dvd players coming out with support =
for this format as well. another alternative is a format called xvid, =
but it is still under heavy development, and a bit quirky sometimes.
if you do decide to go with divx, its important to note that the =
best compression is achieved with 2-pass encoding. there is a =
specialized program that acts as a front end for the divx codec and =
basically does all of the work for you. its called gordianknot. more =
info about it here:
http://www.doom9.org/ (download section)
...there are also some guides to using gordianknot at that same page.
...most of that stuff is intended for converting dvd movies over to divx =
encoded avi files, but the program works exactly the same for both cases =
(just open the .avi file instead of the dvd .vob file).
