bad ground or alternator?

i'm thinking i have bad grounds again, here's the symptoms: it seems that 
the alternator is working intermittently, about three times yesterday i 
caught my volt meter reading dead zero, both times the car died shortly 
after. but after jump starting it a couple of times the voltmeter would read 
normal. it seems by the pattern that when you first start the car after it's 
cool the alternator doesn't work, but after you let it die and jump start it 
the alternator will come to life. sound like a bad ground or  will 
alternators start working off and on when they start to go bad? tia
