16v A/F Mixture settings??

Apart from blocked up injectors, what and how to adjust the Air and Fuel 
Mixture settings on a stock 16v?

I have a fealing that the car has been running lean for way to long (I just 
checked the spark plugs and #3 #4 where white, have to check the other two) 
- and therefore the engine failure.

I'd like to avoid this in the future. Would the best thing be to take it to 
a shop (probably have all the right tools which I don't)?
