Nah...you can rebuild an engine in a weekend without pulling it.
Provided nothing has been scored badly (requiring serious bore work or
crank/rod journal grinding).

Also, I second the motion to get a compression tester.  Most of them
that I've seen are long enough to get down the 16v spark plug holes.
