F**k - of all the things that can break

On my way home today the 16v imploded on me .. ok or so it sounds.

Symptoms:
Car lost power, like running on 3 or 2 cylinders, probably was 3.
At idle you can hear the car blubber like it had a lumpy cam.
Heavy clacking from the 4th cylinder side of the block with more than 
feathering the gas.
Couldn't sustain idle unless I kept my foot on the gas.
Water and oil temps stayed normal - I limped it home for several miles.
Not leaking any fluids, it's not the tranny.
Motor is stock and just shy of 150k.

Oh, and before there was that metallic scraping sound for the past couple 
weeks at 3500RPM .. I think that's what this turned into.

Most likely what's broken?

And why does it have to be the f-ing motor!!! Now I am going to buy a Honda 
to beat on :-(
