Strange wiring setup
Hi list,
Well, as some of you know, I have this '81 Scirocco diesel conversion, and
because of the "special nature" of the car, I have discovered some truly
strange wiring rigs therein. Only one of them concerns me however: It looks
like someone has appropriated the use of what was originally the fan thermo
switch supply wire for the use of the radio (fused with a 16A fuse from the
fuse box)... the car had factory air at one point and when they removed the
AC relay, they apparently didn't know what to do with the fan wiring circuit
that had a bypass through the AC. Well, this is fine as far as the radio is
concerned, but it looks like in order to get power to the fan, they have
wired the + terminal of the thermo switch directly to the + terminal of the
starter, i.e. direct 12V battery voltage. So I guess my question is, could it
be harmful to the switch or fan motor to be wired in this unfused condition?
Should I try to install an inline fuse or fusible link just in case? Where's
the radio supposed to be wired from anyway (or doesn't it matter?) Mr. Robt
Bentley doesn't show a radio in the wiring scematic for the '81.
Thanks,
Court
